Living as a Muslim in Paris by Youssef Bouldlal

I was looking for some practitioners for my research as at the moment I am lacking in research but I found this blog that is about living in Paris as a Muslim  by Youssef Boudlal. I found this  blog quite interesting as he mention that photographing the daily life's of Muslims living in Paris to be a challenge. I love how he wanted to document these people life's even though the world is full of prejudice towards Muslims.

The Photo above caught my eye when I was looking at religious photos. It caught my eye because of the colours and the angle the photo was taken, which is above the head looking down onto the open hands the photo is full of shapes which is something that Paul Hill mentions to me in my tutorial.

This project relevant to my project as it is similar to what I am currently doing, looking at a culture that is in a different environment. Except I am not following the Buddhist around which would be a interesting thought as I would get to see a different view of the monks in a different environment. This could influence my work if I decide to follow the Buddhist around.

Liverpool Tate Gallery

In the MIS it mention the Tate gallery in London for a visit so  that we could  get a basic idea on how we could set up our degree show but I did not have the time or the money to go to London so I decided that I would go to the Tate gallery in Liverpool which had some interesting exhibitions.

The set of photos from above are all displayed in a similar way, a line of images that are the same all in black and white with a large white border and black frame. What annoyed me about this is  that the lighting got in the way of the image so I had to move around to try to get a better look of what I was seeing.

I quite liked this way of displaying the photos as it show that the photographs are a set not separate images again I was having trouble seeing the images as the lighting was in the way as you can see in the photo. With this display you eye are drawn to the center and then outwards

The set of photo and framed paragraphs give a good mix of information and images. Your eyes are not drawn to any singular part of the display, the only thing I think would improve this would be if the photos were larger, also the framed paragraphs are more to the left of the display which I did not understand why.

I quite like the idea of having a installation as the one above show a number of panels that show a sort of pattern but it wad the panels that had photographed on that interested me the most as i thought they would be a great way to display Polaroids.

inspiring photos

I wanted to get some more inspiration to what  I could photograph while in the temple so I found some interesting photographs from a website.

Prayer spoons in Japan

The photograph above is of Japanese praying spoons were people write their wish or prayer on and place it on the hooks their can be hundreds of these spoons located at the temples. I like how it is personal but other people can read them if they wanted to. The main focus is the spoons especially the light ones it make you want to read what is on them. I find this photo inspiring as their are some objects that the monks and the visitor use that I could photograph but their is one thing that can be personal which is when a monk ties string around the wrist of a person while chanting.

Buddhist prayers

I quite like this photo as it is something that everyone at the temple do. I find it inspiring as I have not really payed much attention to it so I will be trying to photograph this pose a little bit more often.

Magha Puja Day

Magha Puja Day (Fourfold Assembly or "Sangha Day")

The ceremony at Wat Phra Dhammakaya is one of the largest held in Thailand which
main Light For Peace.

Magha Puja Day takes places on the full moon day of the third lunar month (March). This holy day is observed to commemorate an important event in the life of the Buddha. This event occurred early in the Buddha's teaching life.

After the first Rains Retreat (Vassa) at the Deer Park at Sarnath, the Buddha went to Rajagaha city where 1250 Arahats,(Enlightened saints) who were the Buddha's disciples, without prior appointment, returned from their wanderings to pay respect to the Buddha. They assembled in the Veruvana Monastery with the two chief disciples of the Buddha, Ven. Sariputta and Ven. Moggalana.

The assembly is called the Fourfold Assembly because it consisted of four factors: (1) All 1250 were Arahats; (2) All of them were ordained by the Buddha himself; (3) They assembled by themselves  without any prior call; (4) It was the full moon day of Magha month (March).
